Svetlana Travis, also known as Svetlana Zakharova, was arrested on a charge of grand larceny by extortion, for her alleged attempt earlier this year to "shake down" the former disgraced governor at the hotel.
That suit said Spitzer had paid money to stop Travis from making their "trysts" public, and that her claims of assault were made against him in revenge for him cutting ties with her.
Spitzer's attorney, Adam Kaufmann, told the AP that in February, the woman called Spitzer from California, where she had been living, to say she was returning to her native Russian Federation via New York City.
Travis told detectives that ex-New York governor Spitzer, 57, had assaulted her during a heated row in a $1,000 suite at The Plaza Hotel in February after she revealed plans to return to Moscow.
Adam Kaufmann, Spitzer's lawyer, said, "We have been informed by the Bronx District Attorney that Ms. Travis has been arrested and charged with extortion-related crimes against Mr. Spitzer and others".
On Tuesday, the criminal case against Travis was heard in a Manhattan court.
Spitzer, who in 2008 stepped down as governor amid another hooker scandal, was not at the court proceeding.
Bronx prosecutors accuse a woman of extorting almost $400,000 out of governor-turned-developer Eliot Spitzer. But she called a few hours later and asked that he return to the room, where she had become "highly emotional and was threatening self-harm", he said.

But as Trump's campaign manager, she has surely asked him whether there might be other, similar instances to defend. Trump's threat to name a special prosecutor was one of the most controversial of his debate points.
But she refused to co-operate with police and flew to Russian Federation later that night. The lawsuit was dropped two months later.
Svetlana Travis, 26, "consistently threatened to expose intimate details of prior relationships with [Spitzer's] family, as well as the media", prosecutors said.
The woman called 911, saying she had cut herself and was distraught and having a breakdown, according to two law enforcement officials with knowledge of the case.
She is also under investigation for extorting tens of thousands of dollars from another man, as well as forging his name on a high-end lease agreement, according to the prosecutor.
It was not immediately clear if she had an attorney who could comment on the charges.
Charges were never filed against Spitzer in the case. She later left the country. They were not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
Police sources said after Spitzer, 57, left her at the hotel on February 13, she cut herself with a broken glass. At the hospital, she told doctors she had a relationship with the 56-year-old Spitzer, and he choked her and shoved her after an argument, the officials said.
