Lebanon's newly elected President Michel Aoun has vowed to uproot corruption and strive for nation-building in the deeply divided country.
Pointing to the election of Michel Aoun as the country's new president, Zarif said, "Through their courage, and capabilities and the use of democracy, the Lebanese people showed that when they make a decision and others do not meddle with their decision-making, they can build a better future for themselves and the region". Iran is a political and military ally of Assad in the Syrian civil war, where his troops are supported by Iran-backed militias and Hezbollah fighters from neighbouring Lebanon.
In a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, Bassil underlined that Lebanon and Iran had political relations that would be translated before the worldwide conferences "where we share political support".
Azzam conveyed a congratulatory message from Syrian President Bashar Assad to Aoun on his election.
Bassil thanked Iran for supporting Lebanon in its fight against the Zionist entity and the takfiri groups, calling on developing the economic ties between the two countries.

While they scored an initial advance, the offensive has since slowed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor.
Zarif meets with Saudi-backed Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri Tuesday.
The empty presidency was a symptom of an underlying political struggle between rival factions in Lebanon, which has been made worse by the war in neighbouring Syria.
The deal to appoint Aoun as president and Hariri as prime minister has underscored Hezbollah's dominant role in Lebanon.
Syria's government was quick to congratulate Aoun on his election, though Azzam dismissed questions about whether his trip was meant to signal a fresh page in bilateral ties.
Later during the day, Aoun received Head of the Lebanese-Syrian Higher Council Nasri Khoury. He added that Hariri hopes to finish the Cabinet formation within three to four weeks.
