"They will rue the day" they repeal Obama's health care law, Senate Democrats' leader-in-waiting told The Associated Press in an interview in his office on Friday.
Senate Republicans also met and voted to keep Mitch McConnell of Kentucky as the majority leader. His role will be to steer GOP bills to the desk of a president whose name he barely spoke during a tumultuous campaign in which many Republicans viewed Trump and his incendiary comments on Muslims, veterans and others as political poison. McConnell has served as Senate Minority Leader from 2007 to 2015 and ascended to Senate Majority Leader after Republicans won control of that body in the 2014 midterm elections.

Schumer said Democrats had learned from the November 8 election that they needed "a sharper, bolder economic message about returning the economic system which so many feel is rigged against them to one that works for the people". After the GOP took over the Senate in 2014, McConnell served as the Majority Leader. That's significant because Republicans don't hold a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.
Schumer is vaulting past No. 2 Senate Democratic leader Dick Durbin of IL and will lead Democrats' last line of defense against the Trump White House and GOP-controlled House. She said she is already backed by two-thirds of Democrats - more than enough to win. "We are Americans first", said McConnell, who early in Barack Obama's presidency said his goal was to limit him to one term.
"None of those decisions have been made yet", House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., told reporters.
