Moscow charged the U.S. Tuesday of a "hostile act" for taking action to more easily arm the Syrian rebels, Reuters reported Russia Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova as saying.
"This policy has brought the current United States administration, which believed that Russian Federation would bow to pressure, into a dead end".
The U.S. chose to loosen rules on arming Syrian rebels, which resulted in allowing for distributions of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles, a move Moscow claimed would directly endanger Russian forces in Syria.
"It is unclear how Russia can threaten the sovereignty and territorial integrity of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states, when it is our American partners and their allies who have enhanced their military activities, expanding the territory of the alliance and moving their military capabilities closer to Russian borders", Zakharova said.
But U.S. officials have accused Russian Federation of failing to follow through on previous cease-fire deals in Syria and say most of Russia's military operations in Syria have targeted rebels rather than the Islamic State (IS) extremists the United States is combating with its own air campaign. Moscow has to take such actions into account when planning its own moves, she added. "Lavrov pointed out that if Washington eased restrictions on arming Syrian rebels, so that portable air defense systems could be provided to them, tensions may increase as well as the death toll".
'Now they give support to terrorist groups, including Daesh, YPG, PYD. However, previous shipments of USA arms have landed in the hands of extremist organizations in Syria, including the al-Qaida-affiliated Nusra front.
Syria: Russia-Turkey prepare rebel-regime meeting in Astana
"It is impossible for the Obama administration not to understand that such weapons will quickly end up in the hands of jihadists with whom the ostensibly "moderate" opposition has long acted as one".
"This can only be described as sponsoring terrorism", the statement said.
It said that such weapons deliveries would pose a "direct threat" to Russian warplanes, military personnel, and diplomatic staff in Syria.
Moscow views the decision as "hostile", the diplomat added, saying that the outgoing Obama administration "appears.to create problems for the incoming Trump administration and complicate its relations on the global stage, as well as to force it to adopt an anti-Russia policy". He said he told Russian President Vladimir Putin to "cut it out" with the hacking and said "Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave" at Republican voters' warming to Putin.
The Russian Foreign Ministry also took aim at what it said was a section of the legislation allowing for the supply of weapons, including portable rocket launchers, to rebels fighting against Assad's forces.
