Acosta asked the president-elect. That countered conventional wisdom that Trump's statements were stump-inspired hyperbole, and knocked a few dollars off of Time Warner shares, which have remained down until today. He dismissed a claim, included in the dossier, that Trump surrogate Michael Cohen met with Russian officials overseas to participate in some kind of hacking scheme.
Trump went on to say CNN was "fake news", a comment that has been rebuked by other media outlets, including top cable news competitor Fox News.
CNN also said its decision is different from that of BuzzFeed News, which published the full actual account of information (it contains some graphic information, which is why we haven't linked to it).
"I can never recall a scenario in which I was tempted to throw somebody out of the room", even when he was most frustrated with a reporter, Earnest said at the afternoon's daily briefing. "You are fake news", and refused.
When other reporters failed to defend Acosta, a civil war broke out about media responsibility.

"Since you are attacking us, can you give us a question?"
"Not you. Your news organisation is bad", Trump told the USA broadcaster's White House correspondent, Jim Acosta.
Donald Trump said that Not you, adding that, "Your organisation is bad!" I think it's one of the reasons I got elected.
Trump was furious after BuzzFeed published an unverified and salacious 35-page report yesterday claiming to show connections between Trump and Russian Federation, using CNN's earlier story (which mentions the report without revealing its full contents or publishing it) as justification for publishing. The Trump team knows this. And we saw a USA congressman call for a reporter's firing for being "disrespectful" to the president-elect. "Given that members of the Trump transition team have so vocally criticised our reporting, we encourage them to identify, specifically, what they believe to be inaccurate", it added. Instead of publishing the 35-page document, as the website BuzzFeed did, CNN offered exclusive details and reporting on the matter. To shout down a journalist, refuse to take his question and label his news organization as "fake news" serves no good goal.
