"Hulu has made it clear that it understands the value that the CBS Television Network, along with Showtime and our basic cable network portfolio, will bring to this new offering". Two of Hulu's close competitors, DirecTV Now and SlingTV both lack CBS channels. A deal with another of Hulu's parent companies, Comcast, which owns NBC, is in the works.
While Hulu's plan to enter the streaming TV space wasn't exactly a secret, Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins earlier today divulged some interesting new details about the company's upcoming service. Also still unofficial is a CBS deal with Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google Unplugged, originally set to launch at this week's Consumer Electronics Show, also in Las Vegas. Episodes of CBS shows, such as "NCIS", "Mom" or "The Big Bang Theory", still will not be offered through Hulu's established $7.99-a-month video-on-demand service. Additionally, Hopkins said the new Hulu service, unlike DirecTV Now, would provide a DVR-type function, allowing viewers to record shows to play them later.
"We are very pleased to make CBS available on Hulu's new live TV service", said Ray Hopkins, President, Television Networks Distribution, CBS Corporation.
As a complement to the company's current ad-supported and ad-free subscription video on demand products, Hulu's new service will offer subscribers the most valuable, premium live TV offering on the market in a groundbreaking, new user experience.

For Hulu, the addition of CBS's shows is a potential edge since its competitor AT&T DirectTV (T.N) has not inked a deal with CBS for its own live streaming platform, DirecTV Now, which went live late a year ago. Hulu, in fact, has snagged a deal with CBS for programming, and it seems like it could manage to be one of the most affordable services yet. Again, that's not something DirecTV Now offers.
For Hulu, the launch of the service, which Hopkins said is slated for sometime in the "next few months", is a long time coming.
