The Islamic Republican of Iran conducted a ballistic missile launch Sunday in what is clearly a violation of a United Nations resolution barring the such tests.

The launch occurred at a well-known test site outside Semnan, about 140 miles east of Tehran, on Sunday.
At a press briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer was asked about the test.
It was not immediately clear whether the test launch violated a United Nations Security Council resolution.
This month, Iranian lawmakers approved plans to increase military spending, including expanding the long-range missile programme.

The Iran deal was a long-sought foreign policy goal of the Obama administration, but faced great push-back from Republicans. The provision, however, is not part of the nuclear deal. "Together, we will make America and Israel safe again".
United Nations Security Council resolution 2231, which formalized the nuclear deal with Iran previous year, "calls upon Iran not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles created to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons".

Experts have also said that countries such as Iran can be expected to engage in provocative behavior during the early days of the new presidency in order to test the president's response.
Worldwide sanctions, which were imposed to cripple Iran and force an end to the nation's nuclear ambitions were lifted.
