Thousands of people are gathering in the Gambia for the inauguration of the country's new President, Adama Barrow, after a lengthy power struggle forced him into exile.
Barrow will be sworn-in by the new Chief Justice, Justice Hassan Jallow.
February 18 is also the anniversary of The Gambia's independence from Britain, but many are also calling the day the birth of a third republic following the ousting of Yahya Jammeh at the ballot box.
Saturday's ceremony was held to let Gambians witness a swearing-in that echoed the official one last month.
The ceremony took place in the presence of Heads of State of the sub region with the remarkable presence of Senegalese president Macky Sall who played a crucial role in ensuring that Barrow takes over command as deserved.
"We inherited an economic decline", Barrow said, adding that the political impasse saw businesses shut down, more than 50,000 people flee and over 126,000 become displaced internally.Читайте также: Former Cardinals WR Michael Floyd pleads guilty to Extreme DUI
"We feel happy because he is our elected president".
Worldwide monetary support is being pledged to Gambia with the European Union promising a package of about 80 million dollars.
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson visited Mr Barrow on Tuesday, saying: "We are here to help". The regional force has secured the country during the transition, which has remained peaceful.
Hundreds of thousands of Gambians welcomed Barrow's return to The Gambia on January 26.
United States and British diplomats were finding it hard to enter the stadium, an AFP correspondent reported, as people who had not been able to get inside massed against a heavy security presence.
Others attending included the heads of state of Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Ghana, and the USA assistant secretary of state for African affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
