The statistics also show Brant's population was 36,707 in 2016, up three per cent from 35,636 in 2011.
According to the census, areas in the city that saw more than 65 per cent increase in growth included: Amber Trails, West Kildonan, Sage Creek and Waverley West.
He sees population growth around Greater Vancouver spreading to the Squamish-Lillooet region and growth in Victoria spreading up the eastern part of Vancouver Island to Nanaimo.
Data from the 2016 census shows Canada is the fastest growing country in the G7.
The signs of Guelph's growth have been obvious in recent years. The country's population increased by 1.7 million for a growth rate of five per cent - slightly lower than the 5.9 per cent reported in the 2006-2011 census.
Nanuvut's population grew 12.5 per cent between 2011 and 2016 and had the highest growth rate of any province or territory.
Statistics Canada released its 2016 population and dwelling counts on Wednesday, showing B.C. has hit 4.6 million people, and is the sixth fastest growing province behind Nunavut, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon.
"That's meteoric rise for Edmonton", said Mayor Don Iveson, saying the city has still seen growth despite economic challenges. The information published Wednesday is the first of several releases of data to come from Statistics Canada over the next year that will eventually paint a detailed picture of the country, right down to the local level - including age breakdowns of the population, family makeup, languages spoken, immigration and ethnic origin, the level of education attained and income earned.
Specific data on immigration for this census period won't be made public this fall when the government releases census data on global migration and ethnocultural diversity.

The final map shows the 63 census tracts (out of a total of 1,426 CTs) with growth of at least 2,000 persons.
Two thirds of the population growth was a result of immigration to Canada, and one third was due to births, which outnumbered deaths, over the five-year period.
The population and dwelling counts are the first part of the census to be released by the federal statistical agency.
It is expected the nation's future population growth will be increasingly linked to migratory increases, mainly because of low fertility and an aging population. These dwelling counts include everything from one-room apartment units to mansions.

According to Tracey Leesti, director Statistics Canada's income statistics division, this change doesn't necessarily indicate an increase in housing builds, but likely means households are getting smaller.
"When we look at migration patterns, compared to say, 20 years ago, we were much more transient", said Brown.
