Rep. Tom Graves said, "As Agriculture Secretary, Governor Perdue will be a strong voice for our nation's farmers, ranchers, and agribusinesses, and an effective leader for this important department".
Former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue was overwhelmingly confirmed by the U-S Senate yesterday as Secretary of Agriculture.
Perdue was a veterinarian, small businessman, Air Force captain, and state senator for over a decade before being elected governor in 2002 - the first Republican to hold the office since Reconstruction.
"Sonny Perdue is the first Southern ag secretary in more than 20 years", Commissioner Quarles said.
Purdue is a former state legislator and two-term governor in Georgia.
He also visited Cuba, China and South America as part of several trade missions aimed at growing exports for Peach State farmers.
As head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Perdue will oversee roughly 100,000 employees and administer a budget of approximately $140 billion spread across multiple programs.
Saints leaning against Malcolm Butler trade
Over the past few months, there were reports going around that the Saints were interested in the one-time Pro Bowler. The 27-year-old cornerback has had an incredible NFL career, despite only being in the league for three years.
The strong and bipartisan Senate vote was evidence that Perdue was the least controversial of Trump's cabinet nominees and of the broad support of farm and agribusiness groups for him.
Democrats surely think so.
"It's just going to be very good to have a secretary finally", said Bill Northey, Iowa's secretary of agriculture. The Southern businessman-unrelated to and unaffiliated with the owners of food and poultry companies Perdue and Perdue Farms-takes charge of the USDA as the agency faces deep cuts despite an agricultural downturn.
Trump has also reached out to farmers on the issue of regulation, saying the government has too many rules that negatively affect farm country. Trump has also proposed slashing USDA programs, a move likely to bring him into open conflict with farmers. David Perdue, R-Ga., presided over the upper chamber. Over the coming year, Purdue's main task will be working with lawmakers on the next five-year farm bill. "He even looked toward Secretary Perdue and said, 'Let's get these problems fixed'".
The vote makes Perdue among the last members of Trump's cabinet to be confirmed, though many other senior vacancies remain. "Perdue is well-positioned to lead the USDA in helping create more opportunity for US producers", Smith said.
Perdue will also be part of the administration's response to a dispute with Canada's dairy industry, which has a new lower-priced classification of milk product that Trump says is harming US producers in dairy states like Wisconsin and NY.
Trump's order establishes a task force in the U.S. Department of Agriculture to evaluate measures to spur industry growth and potentially remove obstacles - another step in his general pledge to deregulate American business.
