Newberry is located about 241km northwest from Charleston Port in SC.
In a statement, Samsung Electronics Chief Executive B.K. Yoon said the investment would allow Samsung to "increase the speed with which we can deliver premium home appliances that reflect the regional preferences of our fastest-growing and most important consumer market".
"Samsung's new plant will inject millions of dollars into Newberry and serve as a catalyst for further investment across the Palmetto State", he continued. Samsung already operates a call center in Greenville, South Carolina, that supports 800 jobs.
"With this investment, Samsung is reaffirming its commitment to expanding its USA operations and deepening our connection to its American consumers, engineers and innovators who are driving global trends in consumer electronics", Tim Baxter, president and CEO of Samsung Electronics America, said in a statement. When the factory is up and running, it will employ workers in various roles, including craftsmen, operators, engineers and other technical and nontechnical positions. It is expected to begin operation in early 2018.
Samsung said the facility will produce premium home appliances, including washing machines.
The company said the US$380 million investment in SC was an initial one, "with plans to grow from there".

More than 950 jobs are making their way to Newberry County, as Samsung gears up to build a manufacturing plant in the area, the state Department of Commerce announced Wednesday morning. The announcement came hours after new South Korean President Moon Jae-in left for the United States for meetings with President Donald Trump. The company ultimately selected the Newberry County site for its high-skilled workforce, robust supply chain and transportation infrastructure and commitment to public-private partnerships.
Governor Henry McMaster believes this project will change the very fabric of the rural community.
A celebratory event was to be held in Newberry later Wednesday.
"As the demand for the products is rising globally, the establishment of a new USA production line will not lead to the supply decline from factories of other regions", a Samsung Electronics official said.
Established in 1969 and employing almost half a million people worldwide, Samsung manufactures TVs, smartphones, wearable devices, cameras, digital appliances, network systems and more.
