The official readout said Trump also "reiterated his determination to seek more balanced trade relations with America's trading partners"-an implicit threat to press ahead with trade war measures against China".
It's unclear whether any of those issues will come up in discussions at the G-20 summit in Germany this week, at which Trump and Xi are expected to hold a bilateral meeting. United States citizens and businesses will be prohibited from doing business with those companies and individuals.
On Sunday, Beijing warned the US government that sending an American naval vessel into territorial waters it claims around the Paracel Islands in the disputed South China Sea was a "serious political and military provocation", in the latest of a slew of incidents that augur souring relations between the world's two largest economies. The Chinese government, however, is reluctant to impose further sanctions against North Korea that could provoke the collapse of the regime and provide an opening for the USA and its allies to exploit.
The US and Chinese presidents spoke in a scheduled call hours after relations came under renewed pressure as an American warship sailed near a disputed island in the South China Sea. North Korea's newest armaments by no means obviate America's own huge investments in nuclear weaponry and anti-missile technology, but Pyongyang's programs seem unlikely to be reversed.
Prof. Zhou Zunnan, of China Foreign Affairs University, says Washington is using "political blackmail" to pressure China into concessions on other issues - particularly trade.
But at the same time, the broadcaster said relations had also been affected "by some negative factors".

The gesture of Washington, just before the telephone conversation Trump-Xi scheduled in advance, seems to confirm the hardening of relations between the two powers, after the efforts of reconciliation expressed in April during the summit of Mar-a-Lago in Florida between the two men.
Still, the current chill is not without precedent: previous U.S. Presidents have also had initial optimism in bilateral relations hit the skids.
"I don't see that alone as a provocation towards China, rather I think if we connect up these other areas, including sanctions on Chinese entities, that's the thing to watch".
