Regardless of the intricacies of the North Korean situation, President Trump isn't doing anything to win favor with Beijing by making arms deals with Taiwan or violating areas that China claims as their own.
Trump, Putin and Xi will attend the Group of 20 summit in Germany later this week.
Trump's call with Xi followed a separate chat with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, of Japan, a USA trade rival that's also key ally against Kim's regime. They highlighted "their unity with respect to increasing pressure on the regime to change its unsafe path", the administration said.
