Spider-Man is once again the friendly neighborhood hero of the box office. Not bad at all for a Hollywood movie!
While initial estimates predicted the new Spidey movie would gross between $85 million to $110 million at the US box office this weekend, our sister site Variety reports that "first-day business lifted those to the $115 million-plus range". This positive word of mouth has given it an edge at the ticket window.
The best example of this is "Wonder Woman", which has a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Those numbers might seem high, but they're actually quite good - last year's largely panned "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", fell off by almost 70% in its second weekend, and then 54% the next weekend. THe film is on track to become Sony's second-highest opening of all time and the second-highest opening for a Spider-Man film, after Spider-Man 3.
