At present it has merely been labelled as a "review of application for investment", but according to sources obtained by the Des Moines Register, Apple does have concrete plans to build a data center on a 3,500 acre (5.46 square miles) piece of annexed land in Waukee, Dallas County.
State and local authorities have collectively approved roughly $208 million in tax incentives for the project.
With construction scheduled to begin early next year and plans to bring the data center and its 50 high-paying jobs online in 2020, he said the operation will bolster Apple's existing support network of 30 companies in Iowa to "deliver the horsepower for the technologies of tomorrow". The company is reportedly planning to follow Google, Facebook, and Microsoft in building a data center in Iowa. The new Public Improvement Fund, to be established and managed by the City of Waukee, will support the development of community projects like parks, libraries and recreational spaces, as well as infrastructure needs.
The Iowa data center will join Apple facilities in California, Nevada, Oregon and North Carolina, which also host services such as iCloud, Apple Music and the App Store.
Cook reiterated that commitment on Thursday, noting that nearly every Apple product includes parts made in America.
No details about Project Morgan have been released publicly, and it's not entirely clear whether Apple has made the final decision to build in Waukee.
