Andre Ethier is expected back in September. Adding Granderson means that manager Dave Roberts will have plenty options to play with during the home stretch to the playoffs.
With Van Slyke gone in a trade, Ethier continuing to rehab his injury and Toles out for the season even with Taylor the outfield depth became depleted. Outfielders Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto will get their regular playing time, but Juan Lagares and specifically Brandon Nimmo will benefit from the absence of Granderson.
