Shinsuke Nakamura had defeated John Cena earlier to become the No.1 contender.
The show kicked off by Mahal once again basking in the glory of his successful title defense at Summerslam before the Singh Brothers issued their apology for losing to Nakamura in a handicap match. They now want to kiss his feet on behalf of India.
Nakamura tries to fight off all three men, but the numbers game gets the best of the King of Strong Style.
Mahal is all over Orton, until Randy dodges a charge, sending the champ into the ring post.
Orton and Nakamura have both failed in their attempts to defeat Mahal in the past.
Dustin Johnson Out-Spiethed Spieth
Describing the impressive display of power and precision under pressure by saying, "It's only 300 carry". Dustin Johnson , who also started the day tied for the lead, shot a three-under 67 to get to nine under.
Though the storyline surrounding the WWE championship both opened and closed the show for the first time in weeks, it was rather run-of-the-mill and only used to setup a match that was announced for next week at the start of the show without any development. They don't quite have the chemistry yet, but Benjamin gets the hot tag and takes out Konnor and Viktor. Benjamin won the match with a Pay Dirt (jumping reverse STO) on Viktor.
Also on Smackdown, United States Champion AJ Styles began his USA open challenge where he will give anyone a chance to face him for the title. None other than Tye Dillinger, who enthusiastically appeared to answer the call...and got blindsided by Baron Corbin.
They took turns working over Orton as Nakamura recovered on the ring apron. After the match, Lana instructed two photographers to enter the ring and take pictures of them celebrating the victory.
Dillinger recovered quicly however, repaying Corbin in kind and ejecting him from the ring so that he could start the match properly, but the ideal 10 fell to a Calf-Crusher from the champ that had him quickly tapping out. Corbin attacked Dillinger again after the match, but Styles ran him off.
Bobby Roode is set to play an important role on SmackDown Live. What's the story? This time around he defeated Mike Kanellis in a match that went three minutes.
In a fairly one-sided affair, Bobby Roode follows an emphatic spinebuster with the Glorious DDT to start a winning streak, going 2-0 on SmackDown Live.
After interrupting the singing of Aiden English in the middle of the ring, Kevin Owens complimented the performance and excused English from the squared circle before turning his focus to how he was screwed over last week. Before the match, Kevin Owens complained to Shane McMahon. He said that this would never happen if he was on Raw. Shane came out and told Owens he had to step in last week since the referee (Corbin) bailed on the match. McMahon explained the situation and noted that he counted the pinfall.
Roode's about as old school as you get when it comes to in-ring technique, with many likening him to Triple H. Owens took over as referee.
