Supreme Leader of Iran Ali Khamenei formally approved the re-election of country's President Hassan Rouhani for his second term at a ceremony held in Tehran. "I confirm the vote and appoint you as President of the republic", Khamenei said in front of a packed audience of Iranian officials. Among those in attendance at the ceremony was former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who fell out of favour with the establishment and was notably barred from standing as a candidate.
The law also imposed new sanctions on Russian Federation and North Korea.
Trump, who during his election campaign a year ago called 2015's nuclear agreement "the worst deal ever", signed new sanctions into law on Wednesday, along with measures against Russian Federation and North Korea.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi also warned that the "hostile" USA measures would impact the implementation of the 2015 nuclear deal and said Tehran reserved the right to respond, according to state news agency IRNA.
"We will certainly not fall into the trap of United States policy and Trump, and our reaction will be very carefully considered", he added. French energy giant Total defied US pressure in July by signing a multi-billion-dollar gas deal with Iran.
The new United States sanctions target Iran's missile programme and human rights violations, which were not covered under the 2015 nuclear deal.
The U.S. legislation imposes mandatory penalties on people involved in Iran's ballistic missile program and anyone who does business with them.

"And the second debate is, if these sanctions are to be implemented, how should Iran respond?"
Religious, military, and political leaders attended the August 3 ceremony, which was broadcast on Iranian state television.
"Eight presidents, 19 parliament speakers, nine vice presidents and prime ministers, seven parliament vice-speakers, 11 foreign ministers and 35 special envoys from different countries will reportedly attend the ceremony", the report said.
During the event, Rouhani received his validation edict from the Leader and was officially validated into the office for the second time.
Analysts said Rouhani may struggle to make a significant impact given sharpening divisions in the dual clerical-republican power structure, and Washington's return to an aggressive Iran policy since Donald Trump took office.
His nearest conservative challenger Ebrahim Raisi got 38.5 percent of the ballots.
