His efforts have been hampered by bellicose rhetoric on all sides of the North Korean issue, and worsening relations between Seoul and Washington.
Though President Trump has claimed "talk of appeasement" with North Korea "will not work", Mr Putin said he believes the Trump administration is "willing to resolve the situation".
Seoul's decision to complete the deployment of a USA missile defense system is fanning controversy within the country, while concerns for further retaliation from China grows.
Sanctions have not stopped North Korea boosting its nuclear and missile capacity as it faces off with Trump who has vowed to stop Pyongyang from being able to hit the mainland United States with a nuclear weapon.
Yet, the growing North Korean threat could stifle some of the opposition, experts say.
