On Setp. 4, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley asserted that the U.S. was prepared to take military action against North Korea if global sanctions did not deter the Kim regime. "Does North Korea threaten the existence of the United States or any of our allies right now?"
"Mattis seems to be informing North Korea - and others - that the USA now has no plans to "annihilate" North Korea but that does not mean the United States lacks the capability to do so", director of intelligence John Grisafi said.
For years, the problem with any United States military action against North Korea's nuclear program has been the mass of conventional artillery Pyongyang keeps in range of Seoul, a metropolitan area of 25 million people.
"China is responsible for 90 percent of North Korea's trade and North Korea has only six months of oil supplies left, there is scope to continue to put pressure on the regime".

"We strongly urge the DPRK (North Korea) to face the strong will of denuclearization from the worldwide community, earnestly abide by the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, stop taking mistaken actions which worsen the situation and are also not in line with its own interests, and effectively return to the track of solving the problem through dialogue", it added.
"We have many military options and the president wanted to be briefed on each one of them", Mattis said.
Earlier Sunday, Mr. Trump tweeted his reaction to North Korea's latest provocation. In 1985, the North Korean government signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but, within a few years, began construction of its first nuclear facility.
Experts say hydrogen bombs use nuclear fusion and can be up to a thousand times or more powerful than an atomic bomb.
Trump tweeted that North Korea is a "great threat and embarrassment to China, which is trying to help but with little success".
Chinese President Xi Jinping said after meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Beijing that China remained committed to the goal of a non-nuclear Korean peninsula.
