A top commander was among six foreign militants of Lashkher-e-Toiba (LeT) killed while one Indian Air Force (IAF) Garud martyred and a soldier injured in a fierce encounter in north Kashmir district of Bandipora, where protests erupted on Saturdayafternoon. The Garud Commando is the special forces unit of the IAF. Internet services were suspended in the district.
"The encounter is now finished and was a success. Weapons and ammunition recovered", DGP SP Vaid tweeted.
Vaid had recently said around 170 militants were gunned down by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir this year. The outfit is led by the radical Zakir Musa. Government sources believe that not only there is leadership vacuum in Lashkar now but it is also facing crisis at cadre-level which has dashed its operational capabilities to a very large extent across the Kashmir.

Security forces launched a search operation in Chandergeer village in Hajin area of the district after receiving specific intelligence input about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said. Security forces also managed to capture one of the two attackers. Police said that Mehmood was involved in the killing of BSF personnel in Hajin last month.
