Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who leads the Movement of New Forces party in Ukraine, was arrested by the Ukrainian authorities late-night on December 8, three days after their failed attempt to detain him.
General Prosecutor Yuriy Lutsenko later acknowledged that the operation could have been carried out more effectively, but said police had acted in accordance with the law.
Prosecutor General Yuri Lutsenko claimed on television that his office has evidence that Saakashvili's representative received $500,000 from Ukrainian businessmen who have ties to Russian Federation to finance the protests.
Sakaashvili is being investigated for alleged support of a criminal organisation, among other charges.
According to the National Police, Mikheil Saakashvili, who is charged with assisting criminal groups and covering up their criminal activities, was apprehended in a flat in Kyiv's Solomianka District and transferred to a detention facility.

"I don't exclude that the inquiry may ask for extra expertise, including from worldwide organisations, to enhance trust", Poroshenko told reporters in Vilnius at a joint press conference with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite.
Boiciurkiw went on to say that the government had not only "turned Sakaashvili into a martyr, but also lit a fuse of discontempt".
He has since continued leading protests outside parliament demanding Poroshenko's impeachment over his failure to fight high-level corruption.
