Revealed at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2017, the HomePod smart speaker is keeping fans waiting. The update brings a slew of new features, including support for Apple's forthcoming smart speaker, dubbed HomePod. It is worth mentioning that Apple is reportedly working on the next-gen HomePod speaker as well.
This confirms that Apple doesnt plan to put Siri in any third-party devices like Google and Amazon have been doing, putting the assistant in things like home appliances and in-car audio solutions, going as far as saying that this model is probably not sustainable.
The device will sell for Dollars 349 in a choice of white or space grey. The feature is now only supported in the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia. One of the coolest features of the HomePod is its ability to pair with other HomePod speakers to create a mesh audio network. Both can then be connected with AirPlay 2 and play the same song.
Apple also is counting on HomePod to boost subscriptions to Apple Music and block the rise of rival Spotify.
When it was first unveiled last winter, the HomePod's main marketing advantage was its allegedly superior audio quality.
Apple HomePod available to order Friday, arrives February 9
So if you were planning on buying more than one, it won't offer multi-room support until some unspecified later date ... The company also confirmed customers will be able to pre-order the HomePod online starting January 26.
"HomePod needs to quickly be much more than a high-end audio speaker and the hub for Apple's smart home ambitions with HomeKit". Apple has forecast between $84bn and $87bn in revenue for the holiday - mostly driven by sales of its £999 iPhone X. If your device is compatible with iOS 11 or is already running that version of the Apple OS, then updating shouldn't be an issue.
"The HomePod is being positioned more as a competitor to Sonos' high-end wireless speakers than as a competitor to the plethora of cheap smart speakers flooding the market", The Verge reported. Wider home automation through lighting, thermostats and other products will furthermore be possible using Apple HomeKit - although the list now falls short of competing with the vast number of integrations available through Alexa and Google Assistant.
