Last week, officials announced the deaths of three children due to the virus.
But this year, experts are warning that the flu vaccine may not be as effective against the severe strain of influenza A which is what appears to be the dominant strain throughout Canada.
We already mentioned the early outbreak. Emergency rooms in Chicago dealing with the flu have led to a backup in admission of ambulance patients, forcing ambulances to hold patients longer.
This has prevented ambulances from being able to respond to incoming 911 calls, according to Jose Arballo Jr, spokesman for the Riverside County Department of Public Health.
Antiviral drugs are different from antibiotics.
This brings the total to four deaths so far during the 2017-2018 flu season.
"It started early and it shows up relatively fast", said Richards.

The school, which charges £14,550 ($19,740) per year, was classed as "outstanding" at the last official inspection in 2012. It has an unflinching ethos according to its website: "High standards, excellence and good manners".
"That strain of flu tends to change more rapidly than other strains, from the time we know it's circulating to the time the vaccine is made", says Dr. Sharon Welbel, of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System.
All those who died were over age 65, health officials said, noting the number of deaths is "significantly higher" than the number typically recorded during previous influenza seasons.
In light of panic over reports of the vaccine's effectiveness, the CDC reported that it expects the American vaccine to be 32 percent effective against the H3N2 virus, but this week saw the flu become highly active in 21 states.
Of those, the CDC estimates that as many as 56,000 have died from the viral infection in a given recent year. "What we are seeing is unprecedented compared to the last 10 years of influenza seasons".
The nasal spray, however, is not thought to be a worthwhile preventative measure against this flu.
She says residents should also wash their hands in warm, soapy water, cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing and stay at home if they're sick.
