Members of the NRA have access to special offers from partner companies on its website, ranging from life insurance to wine clubs. Home security company SimpliSafe and Hertz Corp also terminated discount programs.
Before the corporate defections, almost two dozen companies nationwide had offered incentives to NRA members, according to ThinkProgress.com, a news site owned by the Center for American Progress Action Fund. First National Bank of Omaha, which backs the card, said it would not renew its contract. Insurer Chubb Ltd. said it is ending participation in the NRA's gun-owner insurance program, but it provided notice three months ago.
Still, Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla, said the president has a "unique ability right now to maybe really do something about these school shootings" because, at least in some districts, "nobody is more popular", including the NRA. "These associations greatly benefit our customers by buying discounted rooms from groups that might otherwise be charged a penalty by hotels for not using all of the rooms in their block".
