Austin police received a call on January 26 from a woman who said she and her boyfriend were awakened by a gunshot and the sound of breaking glass, then heard someone enter their back door and walk around.
The official ruling on cause of death is pending but investigators believe Giles died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.. Giles fired at police, and an officer fired back, interim Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said.
He drove 11 hours from his New Mexico home to Austin, to confront the couple.

The officers found Giles backing out of the driveway in his Lincoln sedan with a New Mexico license plate and ordered him to stop.
The search warrant also revealed notes Giles wrote in his phone that provided more insight into his motives. Giles reportedly fired his gun once in the driveway and the police returned fire. Moments later, police said they found Giles dead.
Nothing was stolen from the couple's house, the warrant says. An affidavit obtained by the Albuquerque Journal described Giles as "an avid player of video games and was known for watching YouTube videos that were centered on his hobby". He was apparently jealous of Free, creator of the popular YouTube series The Slow Mo Guys, and resented him for his lifestyle and success. The couple thanked their social media following for their support over the incident.
