The move up cost the Jets three second-round picks - 37th and 49th overall this year (both of the Jets' Round 2 selections) and their second-round selection in 2019.
In addition to that, the Colts will have five picks in the first three rounds of the draft and their second-round picks will be back to back - not to mention they are at the beginning of the round.
In a draft that expects to be top-heavy with quarterbacks, the Jets, in need of a franchise quarterback, traded places with a team that doesn't need one.
- New York Jets (@nyjets) March 17, 2018Pleasure doing business with you, @nyjets! The Jets could opt to go with the quarterback who provides the most star power. He entered the starting lineup during his second season with the franchise, when he recorded a career-high 51 tackles and seven sacks, starting all 16 games in a year for the first time.
If the Giants were planning on trading back to secure more value for their pick and still take a quarterback, that plan might have been foiled.

In recent days, general manager Mike Maccagnan has attended the pro days of Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield and UCLA's Josh Rosen. The Jets gave up a ton to just move up three spots. What will the Giants do with the second overall pick and Eli Manning?
The blockbuster trades executed between the Colts and Jets on Saturday officially ushered in the NFL's annual pre-draft madness period. The Jets, on the other hand, seem to be quite a bit more desperate, and we'll see how far their desperation takes them with the thought that now, they will likely have to leapfrog the Jets to get the quarterback they covet. If both players are off the board with the first two picks, the New York Jets could select Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen or Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman Trophy victor, Baker Mayfield. After New York lost out on the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes, the Jets are now primed to draft the quarterback of the future with the third overall pick. (In the Jets' defense, 2009 was an abysmal year for QBs, and the next best passer on the board was Josh Freeman).
Indianapolis, meanwhile, picks up some additional ammo for a rebuild as it moves behind a potential quarterback derby.
With this deal, NY has a chance to find its new face of the franchise.
