More than 1,000 civilians, including children and women, have been killed since mid-November in attacks by the Syrian regime and its allies including Russian Federation in besieged Eastern Ghouta, according to a U.K-based human rights watchdog.
In the wake of the adoption of a United Nations resolution establishing a 30-day truce throughout Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the state of affairs in Syria's East Ghouta region with France's President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the humanitarian situation in the region has recently rapidly deteriorated.
Iran's government, also a backer of the Assad regime, said it would respect the United Nations resolution. "Remember that each one of you chose to fight to defend the truth, dignity, and to save Syria and its people", he added.
The war-monitoring body says that led to fierce fighting when anti-government forces returned fire.
With support from Russian Federation, the Security Council adopted a resolution on the ceasefire to allow for humanitarian aid deliveries and medical evacuations, but the measure did not specify when the truce would go into force beyond saying it should be "without delay".

Bortles, 25, put up the best performance of an otherwise up-and-down career in 2017. I also thought Bortles would be better off resuming his career on another team.
The Syrian regime says it is targeting terrorists inside the enclave, as the draft resolution stated the cease-fire doesn't apply to operations against the Islamic State, al-Qaida and the Nusra Front. "Every minute the council waited on Russian Federation, the human suffering grew", she said. But "parts of the suburbs of Damascus, which are held by the terrorists, are not covered by the ceasefire and clean-up (operations) will continue there", Tasnim quoted him as saying. He said that the people in Damascus are truly suffering due to the acts of the terrorists positioned in the Eastern Ghouta, adding "the appeals of 8 million Syrians do not reach the General Secretariat or the mailboxes of Britain and France's representatives, but the appeals of terrorists do reach them".
Few of Eastern Ghouta's almost 400,000 residents - mostly living in a scattering of towns across the semi-rural area east of the capital - ventured out on Friday.
Meanwhile, Islam Army (Jaish al-Islam), the biggest opposition faction in eastern Ghouta, said that they had killed 25 regime fighters while attempting to advance.
Hamza Birqdar, the military spokesman, said the insurgents had thwarted attacks by pro-government forces trying to advance. The group said it had captured and killed "a number of soldiers" as they tried to infiltrate the area. "The bombing is ongoing at this moment".
The 30-day ceasefire was also binding on U.S. troops and other members of the anti-Isis coalition present in Syria, and on Israeli forces based in the occupied Golan Heights, the Syrian government said.
The Syrian military forces have not commented on the resolution so far.
