A new study from the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University links artificial sweeteners to obesity and diabetes, claiming sweeteners change how the body processes fat and uses energy.
Every couple of years a new artificial sweetener comes out claiming that it's much better than the other artificial sweeteners around, which cause cancer and death, and are the worst thing that you can put in your body.
Hoffman will present the research at Experimental Biology 2018 in San Diego today.
In the latest study, researchers examined the consumption of sugar or sugar substitutes in rats and their effects on cultured cells. "However, it was not until recently that the negative impact of consuming non-caloric artificial sweeteners in the place of sugar had been increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to the dramatic increase in diabetes and obesity, along with the associated complications".

Compared to diets laden with sugar, which simply overpower the body's ability to produce the regulatory hormone insulin, Hoffman said the artificial sweeteners may "kinda trick the body" into thinking it's receiving calories when it ain't, which can throw insulin levels out of whack. They both change the blood vessels and blood, but artificial sweeteners also changed the rats' metabolism.
'In our studies, both sugar and artificial sweeteners seem to exhibit negative effects linked to obesity and diabetes, albeit through very different mechanisms from each other'. After three weeks, the researchers saw significant differences in the concentrations of biochemicals, fats and amino acids in blood samples.
So, they focused on two sugars (glucose and fructose) and the zero-calorie sweeteners aspartame and acesulfame potassium. It is well known that high dietary sugar was linked to negative health outcomes and the study suggested artificial sweeteners did, too.
And after the trial period, it was found that the rats who had consumed a load of synthetic sweeteners displayed "biochemical changes in the blood that could potentially lead to alterations in fat and energy metabolism".
Guzzling diet soft drinks may seem like an easy workaround if you can't kick soda but want to fend off health problems spurred by sugar. It's just another indication to use replacement sweeteners in moderation.
