CBP did not immediately respond to TIME's request for comment, but a representative told CBC that the case was handled appropriately - regardless of whether Roman knew she had crossed the border.
Cedella Roman, 19, said she did not realize she crossed the border during her jog along a beach in White Rock, British Columbia on May 21.
US Border Patrol agents captured a French woman they said crossed the US-Canada border while she was jogging.
"He started telling me that I had crossed the border illegally and I told him I really did not do it on objective", Ms Roman told Radio-Canada (in French).
No such luck. Roman was taken into custody and transferred to a facility in Tacoma, where she remained for two weeks as she and her mom attempted to clear up the red tape.
Roman, a citizen of France who had travelled to Canada to visit her mother in B.C. and work on her English, didn't have any government-issued ID or travel permits on her.
Roman protested that she hadn't seen any warning signs, and didn't initially anticipate how serious the matter would become.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed to CBC that Roman was discharged on June 6. "They asked me to remove all my personal belongings with my jewelry, they searched me everywhere". She had no documentation on her person.
According to the Province, the Canadian-U.S. border "isn't marked in the traditional way". "Both juveniles were so captivated by their Pokémon Go games that they lost track of where they were", said Border Patrol Public Affairs Officer Michael Rappold at the time.
"If an individual enters the United States at a location other than an official port of entry and without inspection by a Customs and Border Protection officer, they have illegally entered the United States and will be processed accordingly", Customs and Border Protection said.
