Serena didn't enjoy a good start to the ongoing season as she withdrew from Australian Open and struggled in the Sunshine tournaments before quitting ahead of the French Open quarter-final due to complications of childbirth.
Kerber broke a second time in the first set to go up 4-3 and then - to the astonishment of an audience that was expecting a comeback from the American - broke Williams a third time to wrap it up 6-3.
It was a time for soul-searching but the experience made her stronger and she has rebounded in style, reaching the Australian Open final and the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. "It's obviously disappointing, but I can not be disappointed, I have so much to look forward to and I am just getting started". This particular tournament, I entered just wanting to win some matches. "To all the moms out there, I was playing for you today and I tried".

"I didn't know a couple of months ago how I would be able to come back". Williams was playing against a lot of them, including time and nature. Two unforced errors helped Serena to break back at love and level at 2-2.
Williams has won 23 Grand Slams, one shy of Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 singles Grand Slam titles. While Kerber made only five, Williams made as many as 24.

Meghan invited Williams' to her May wedding in Windsor which she attended with her husband Alexis.
Kerber celebrated match point by covering her face and collapsing flat on her back, getting grass stains on her white outfit.
Williams missed the 2017 tournament as she was pregnant with her daughter Alexis Jr., who was born on September 1 of that year, and this tournament run has been monumental to watch as she recovered from her pregnancy and related illnesses.
The two also met with former female tennis champions before the match and chatted with ball girls and boys, according to Kensington Palace.
Kerber showed to have a clear gameplan and the athletic brilliance to apply it with no sign of esitation. But, to be fair, Angelique had similar success on her path towards the final.
Kerber and Williams have always shared a mutual respect, and it's a joy to watch them play each other.
