The CPHC forecasts continue to show that all islands are at risk from direct effects from the core of Hurricane Lane.
The National Weather Service said tropical-storm-force winds could begin as early as Wednesday afternoon on the Big Island. The islands will be on the northeast side of Lane, which is where the strongest winds and heaviest rains are found in hurricanes.
The forecast track will likely change some over the coming days as Lane interacts with the surrounding atmosphere and the impact from the friction that is caused as Lane nears the islands, namely the Big Island's mountains.
Rainfall of 20in (51cm) in some areas could lead to major flash flooding, landslides and mudslides, the NHC said.
Hawaii has been plagued by freak natural events this year after a 30,000 foot high ash cloud from the Kilauea volcano blanketed the island in lava and dust. The weather service adds that power outages will last for weeks to possibly months and most of an area hit by the hurricane will be uninhabitable for weeks or months. Hurricane watches cover Oahu and Kauai, where conditions are expected to deteriorate Thursday night into Friday morning.
