A higher Turkish court has rejected an appeal for the release from detention of the American pastor Andrew Brunson, who is facing terrorism-related charges and is now under house arrest in the Aegean province of Izmir.
The United States will take further action against Turkey if it continues to detain American pastor Andrew Brunson, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Thursday in a sign that tensions between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies will continue to escalate over the issue.
Turkey and the USA are now experiencing rocky relations after Washington imposed sanctions on two Turkish Cabinet ministers for not releasing Brunson.
Last month, at Brunson's third court hearing in almost two years, U.S. officials thought they had brokered a deal to free him by pressuring Israel to release a Turkish citizen imprisoned there.
At 1827 GMT the currency stood at 6.0350 to the dollar, 4 percent weaker after tumbling as much as 7 percent earlier.
"We have stood together and will continue to do so", he said, making clear the high-level meeting was meant to communicate unequivocal support for Turkey at a critical juncture.
Tesla forms panel to gauge taking company private

Brunson was charged with terror offenses by a Turkish court and has been held since October 2016.
Turkey has repeatedly criticized the USA for not condemning the coup attempt two years ago.
And the day earlier, two Greek soldiers held by Turkey since March for illegally crossing the border were also freed.
Turkey on Wednesday doubled tariffs on several USA goods, including alcohol and tobacco products and cars, after Trump increased US tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel imports to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
Turkey is calling for the U.S.to extradite a Pennsylvania-based Muslim cleric accused engineering a 2016 coup attempt.
