Boeing defeated Lockheed Martin to win its third prize in a recent flurry of defense contracts, snaring a U.S. Air Force contest valued at as much as $9.2 billion to build training jets to hone the flying skills of future aviators.
"This is all about joint warfighting excellence; we need the T-X to optimize training for pilots heading into our growing fleet of fifth-generation aircraft", said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein. The first T-X aircraft and simulators are scheduled to arrive at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, in 2023.
The award comes less than a week after the Air Force awarded a Boeing-Leonardo bid the win for the Air Force's replacement of its UH-1 nuclear security helicopters. The T-X offered by Boeing is a new aircraft based on a design perfected for the Air Forces' requirement. Boeing's military arm has been eclipsed by the rapid growth of its commercial-jet unit this decade. Then, all undergraduate pilot training bases will transition to the new aircraft, the Air Force said. The Air Force will start by acquiring 46 simulators.
The contract allows the Air Force to eventually purchase up to 475 aircraft and 120 simulators. "We expect T-X to be a franchise program for much of this century", she wrote. Lockheed Martin [LMT] and Leonardo DRS, the USA -subsidiary of Italy's Leonardo, also competed for the contract.
Tropical Storm Kirk Reforms, Expected To Pass Away From USVI
Since then, Kirk's leftovers have generally stuck together as they have continued to truck westward toward the Caribbean. Tropical Storm Kirk was 415 miles east of Barbados and about 535 miles east-southeast of Martinique.
The Air Force says this structure helped it trim the total cost of the program down from the original estimate of $19.7 billion.
Two prototypes of the T-X were produced by Boeing and Saab, with Saab building components for the aft fuselage and other systems. Lockheed Martin partnered with Korea Aerospace Industries to offer the T-50A, an offshoot of KAI's T-50 trainer.
Boeing teamed with Saab to create a new airplane design for the competition.
Boeing team-mate Saab AB said the contract is worth USD9.2 billion with an initial USD813 million deal for the engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) portion.
