Seoul: Kim Jong Un has agreed to hold a second summit with US President Donald Trump as soon as possible, Seoul said Sunday, after Washington´s top diplomat held "productive" talks on denuclearisation with the North Korean leader in Pyongyang.
"Well, I am really pleased for this opportunity".
There, he is due to meet South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Seoul before proceeding to Beijing for talks with the Chinese government.
The North also has accused Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on denuclearization and insisted that sanctions should be lifted before any progress in nuclear talks. "North Korea summit as soon as possible", South Korean press secretary Yoon Young-chan said in a statement.
Harry Kazianis, director of defence studies at the Center for the National Interest, said that given the limited time, there was no way that Kim and Pompeo had "achieved any major breakthroughs", but added that progress may have been achieved on a second US North Korean summit. "So this is, I think, a good outcome for all of us", Pompeo said.
Pompeo also said Japan and the United States were in a position to finalise a trade agreement after Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed the issue in NY last month. "It was another step forward", Pompeo said in a meeting with Moon at the Blue House. "They believe that without nuclear weapons, they are as good as dead".
Pompeo earlier held talks in Tokyo with Japan's prime minister, and pledged that the Trump administration would coordinate and unify its strategy for denuclearization with its allies.
"Today is a very important day for the U.S.as well as South and North Korea", Moon said. On Wednesday, he said there was unanimous support for this at last week's UN General Assembly, even if Russian Federation and China "had some ideas about how we might begin to think about a time when it would be appropriate to reduce them".

After the summit between the leaders of the two Koreas last month, Kim said he was prepared to permanently dismantle his country's main nuclear site at Yongbyon, but only if the United States took "corresponding steps" to build trust.
South Korea has moved forward with various joint projects, but the USA has remained skeptical of North Korea's intentions, and officials have criticized what they view as a slow pace to Kim Jong Un's denuclearization.
In the past few days, North Korea has also renewed its demands for sanctions to be eased.
South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha has given a hint of what a grand bargain between the two countries could look like.
One U.S. official who accompanied Pompeo said Sunday's meeting was "better than the last time", but added that "it's going to be a long haul".
