Other consulates in Melbourne reported by media to have received suspicious packages included those representing Greece, Italy, Spain, Thailand, India, Japan, Pakistan, Egypt, Denmark and Switzerland.
It said the packages were sent to consulates in Melbourne and embassies in Canberra, but did not provide a total number of affected sites or identify any of them.
State police in Melbourne said the incidents there were believed to be "targeted and not impacting the general community".
Staff were initially evacuated from some of the affected buildings, which were placed on temporary lock down, but were allowed to return later on Wednesday afternoon.
Two days before, a suspicious package containing white powder was found at the Argentine consulate in Sydney. The husband of the Swiss honorary consul in Melbourne told the Australia Post a similar story.
USA and British consulate officials confirmed to Reuters that suspicious packages had been discovered at their respective locations.
