The unemployment rate stayed at its record low of 5.8 per cent despite the economy shedding some 7,200 jobs in March. Wage gains rose 0.14 percent last month with paychecks 3.2 percent bigger, year-over-year.
In March, the number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was essentially unchanged at 1.3 million and accounted for 21.1% of the unemployed.
The central bank, which has hiked rates five times since July 2017, held rates steady last month.
By demographic group, there was a drop in the employment-to-population ratio (EPOP) for black workers by 0.3 percentage points to 57.9 percent, the lowest since last April.

For the Bank of Canada, the key area of today's report is likely wages, where growth was effectively unchanged at 2.3% y/y.
Notably, for the mortgage and real estate industries, employment in the construction sector - including residential-home construction - rose after a February decline.
