According to the North's Korean Central News Agency, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended the testing of a newly developed guided tactical weapons system on Wednesday, and applauded the development as having a "very big significance" in strengthening the country's military capabilities.
Kim Jong Un's visit to the tactical weapon testing site came after he visited the North Korean Air and Anti-aircraft Force on Tuesday, according to KCNA, where he inspected a flight drill and expressed "great satisfaction" at their combat readiness.
No other details were given, including if it was a type of missile.
Since the prospects for North Korean denuclearization have soured - with US President Donald Trump's scuttling of a February Hanoi summit with Kim Jong Un and now a new Pyongyang attack on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo - few observers will be surprised if the regime reverts to what had been its default policy.
"I am afraid that, if Pompeo engages in the talks again, the table will be lousy once again and the talks will become entangled", Kwon said. That visit followed Pompeo's hosting a lavish dinner in NY for North Korea's senior diplomats; the meal featured upscale versions of classic American dishes.
"It is fortunate that the personal relationship between our Chairman of the State Affairs Commission and President Trump is on good terms as usual and our Chairman is pleased to get on well with President Trump", he said. With nuclear negotiations between the USA and North Korea stalled, Kim emphasized that he is continuing to upgrade his country's military. The Kremlin has tried for months to secure a meeting with Kim, while simultaneously ramping up diplomatic engagement with North Korea.

The Associated Press could not independently verify North Korea's claim, and it wasn't immediately clear what had been tested.
It is North Korea's first public weapons test since the second US-North Korea summit in Hanoi ended with no agreement in February. North Korea has suspended nuclear and long-range rocket tests, and the North and South Korean leaders have met three times. "If it is a cruise missile, then it has no relevance with the current sanctions". It said the test was conducted by the Academy of Defense Science.
He said that with the USA taking such a position, Pyongyang is likely to feel that the South Korean government has little influence over Washington's position. But there are growing worries that the progress could be killed by mismatched demands between the USA and North Korea over sanctions relief and disarmament.
As for the USA, it is hoping for more concrete evidence of intent to denuclearize from North Korea before pursuing further summit-level talks.
Kim Jong Un wants worldwide sanctions eased as part of negotiations with the Trump administration over possibly rolling back North Korea's nuclear program.
But they said it does not close the door on diplomacy or negotiations about North Korea's nuclear program.
