President Trump said Monday that the Federal Reserve's policies have been "very destructive" to the USA, complaining that Chinese President Xi Jinping's control of the country's central bank gives that country an unfair advantage.
However, as U.S. -Chinese tensions mount, a spokesman for Xi's government said last month that he had "no information at present" on Trump-Xi talks.
Shortly afterward, the Trump administration raised tariffs to 25% on $200 billion of Chinese goods.
"We should be entitled to have a fair playing field, but even without a fair playing field-because our Fed is very, very destructive to us - even without a fair playing field we are winning", he added. He said that he wants China to do well, but that "I don't want them to do as well as us".
When the United States president manages to get some concessions from foreign partners, he "lies and exaggerates what was achieved" in order to impress voters at home, the economist said, adding that Trump wants to demonstrate that he is "tough" on foreign governments.
"I'm never insulted. I've learned not to be insulted", Trump said on the south lawn of the White House. "We're expected to meet and if we don't that's fine and if we do that's fine".
What both sides do agree on is that Mexico will deploy thousands of national police to its southern border region to help enforce its own immigration laws. On Friday, Mexico and the USA announced an agreement that Mexican authorities would take additional steps to curb the flow of migrants.
Mr. Pompeo said the number of people affected will rise from "a couple of hundred" a day to "several thousand per day".
"Nothing more than warmed-up leftovers", said Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat. Asked if he had voted for Trump, angler responded quickly: "I did!"
At the moment, additional tariffs on Chinese goods worth at least US$300 billion have been imposed.

"I'm a member of the U.S. Chamber", Trump said. He has accused China of unfairly subsidizing its companies, stealing US intellectual property, and ripping off USA companies and businesses by creating a distortion between imports and exports.
"Those companies are going to move into other locations and there won't be a tariff", he said. He's actually an incredible guy, he's a great man.
"Though this leaves us more or less back where we started, these episodes do still have real costs for the USA", he said.
Many US business groups have opposed the tariffs, with companies anxious about slowing demand as they pass higher prices along to consumers and manufacturers across a range of products.
Trump is going after the chamber, saying it has its priorities wrong.
China will respond firmly if the United States insists on escalating trade tensions, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said further tariffs were ready to kick in if no deal was reached at a G20 summit this month.
